Contemporary Art Month

During this month you might hear CAM or Contemporary Art Month mentioned. It's a month where participating galleries, museums, performing arts, schools, Restaurants, and stores all over San Antonio fill their spaces with "foward-looking" art of all kinds. Through out the years CAM took place in July, but beginning today its in March.

Their mission statement taken from their website states : "Contemporary Art Month seeks to promote and raise the national profile of San Antonio contemporary art and artists by organizing and facilitating a month-long celebration of contemporary art, providing marketing support, and by organizing and facilitating public education programs."

This is becoming a big deal in our community and we want to see it grow gaining national attention. It will drive our economy and tourism higher during these months.

There are so many events going on this month: Click here for a calendar of events

Asian Festival: year of the tiger

Fun Factor = CoolCoolCoolCool

A cloudy yet breezy day made perfect weather for the 2010 Asian Festival. It is the year of the Tiger, speaking of; a giant inflatable tiger greeted visitors to the festival at the front entrance.  As you walk across the bridge at the Institute of Texan cultures you’re greeted by people so proud of their heritage. They speak of their culture and speak in their language. This is one of the amazing events taking place at the ITC this year.

One of the best things about this event was the food. Oh, my you’re surrounded by booths and booths of different Asian cuisines. From the Teriyaki chicken to Curry, the different aromas filled the air. The festival had exhibits and performances put on by many of the local organizations. Many shows were amazing filled with demonstrations and dancing.

If you haven’t been to the Asian Festival; make plans to visit next year as you will enjoy the amazement of the Asian cultures.

Yee Haw: 2010 Stockshow & Rodeo
Fun Factor = CoolCoolCoolCool

Yep, it was that time in February again where you put on your cowboy boots, throw on that cowboy hat, gather the family and head out to the Rodeo.  Battling the traffic on AT&T Parkway like it was a Spurs game.  You can see families in big SUV’s piling out like Rodeo clowns in a tiny car. Stretching out anticipating the walk to get to the Freeman Coliseum where the fairgrounds are located.  You can see people walking towards the fun.

As you get closer to the action you can hear the screams from people enjoying the rides. You can smell the different scents of carnival food. You can see all of the people running to get to the next ride before it starts. You can feel the nice brisk air of the weather.  First stop, the ticket booth. There was a nice line gathered to wait to get those nice tickets you needed to get food, drinks, or to ride the rides. Some of the food was a little overpriced, but what do you expect?2010RodeoSA017

As you go deeper in to the fairgrounds, I found the density of the crowd get thicker. I was ran over twice by people driving strollers. Once they ran over my foot and the other just ran right in to me.  Those things just might happen when it’s crazy busy.  Well, I headed towards the entrance of the coliseum. I wandered around browsing many of the kiosks they had set up inside. It’s perfect for if you want to buy Rodeo type of merchandise. I thought it was cool. I headed out the exit and wandered more of the fairgrounds. I saw the line to the petting zoo was super long as people and their children await the petting of goats and sheep.

As I headed towards the back, I found more shops and companies giving away free samples of whatever. I call this area a marketplace where they try to get you hooked on products, so you can go to the store and buy them. (Good marketing tactic).

All in all, the rodeo is a great place to have fun, eat some food, and listen to music. If you haven’t been yet, I would make plans to go next year. Oh, and try to make it to one of their concerts too.
